The Plastiki, a boat made entirely from plastic bottles and recycled materials, made a revolutionary journey from San Francisco, California all the way to Sydney, Australia. The construction of this environmentally friendly watercraft and the utilization of it on its 8,000-mile voyage through the pacific ocean was meant to make people think about their own environmental and ecological footprints and bring to light ways in which we ourselves can reuse and recycle everyday objects. The Plastiki's innovator and creator, David de Rothschild, is an environmentally-minded adventurer and an avid conservationist dedicated to sustainability and the overall welfare of the earth and its’ population. Rothschild’s mission pertaining to the Plastiki was to avoid creating more plastic, and instead recycling and reusing the plastic that already exists in the world. He accomplished this by using over 12,500 plastic bottles and a recycling technology called Seretex in the construction of this 60-foot long catamaran. Today, the Plastiki’s pilgrimage and construction serves as an excellent example of what can be accomplished when sustainability becomes a priority.
